Out on the Yering river flats, roofs cop frost, fog, hot summer sun and a steady drop of leaves. We travel to Yering to find out whether your roof needs a few honest repairs or a complete restoration, and we put the answer in writing.

A roof in Yering lives a fairly exposed life. Homes here are spread across vineyards, paddocks and acreage along the Melba Highway, with the Yarra River flats close by. Mornings can start with heavy fog and frost, afternoons can bake, and the trees that make the valley so beautiful keep dropping leaves into gutters and valleys all year.
When something starts to go wrong, the question is rarely simple. Is that water mark on the ceiling a single cracked tile, or a sign the whole roof is past its best? We come out to Yering, get up on the roof, photograph what we find and tell you which camp you are in. If a repair will do the job, that is what you get quoted for. If the roof has reached the point where patching is a waste, we explain why.

Yering sits low in the Yarra Valley, and that location shapes how roofs age. Cold air settles on the river flats overnight, so frost and dew sit on the tiles well into the morning. Moisture that lingers like that feeds moss and lichen, and on older terracotta or concrete tiles it slowly works into the surface until the tiles turn porous.
Then there is the temperature swing. A frosty start followed by a warm afternoon makes the ridge mortar expand and contract day after day, and eventually the bedding lets go and the pointing cracks. Add wind that has nothing to slow it down across open paddocks, plus gum leaves and vineyard debris blowing into valleys, and you have the main reasons Yering roofs leak. Because this all creeps along gradually, the first clue for most people is a brown ring on a bedroom ceiling.
Our first step is always to find what is really causing the trouble. Once we know, the repair is matched to your roof rather than guessed at.
Acreage homes can be a fair way off the road, so give us a rough idea of access when you call. Once on site, we inspect each face of the roof rather than only the corner above the stain. Ridges, pointing, valleys, flashings around flues and skylights, gutters and the extent of any lichen are all noted and photographed.
Down on solid ground again, we go through the photos with you and sort the findings into two piles: what needs doing before winter, and what can sensibly wait. A written quote follows. You owe us nothing for the visit, and you are free to take your time deciding.
A repair is the right call when the problem is isolated. If we find several leaks, ridges failing along most of their length and tiles that are soaking up water, then fixing one spot at a time will only keep you calling us back. In that situation a full restoration is better value.
Restoring is the whole-roof version of the same work. The lichen and grime are blasted off with a pressure cleaner, every cracked tile is changed, ridge lines get new bedding and flexible pointing, and tired valleys and flashings are made good. Once all of that is sound, a sealer goes on, then primer, then a finish coat in whichever colour suits the house and the landscape around it. Compared with stripping and replacing the roof, the outlay is modest.
