Calder Park homes sit on some of the most wind-exposed ground on Melbourne's north-west fringe. When tiles crack, ridge caps loosen or the colour bakes off, our Cairnlea crew just up the road can be there quickly to repair it, or restore it if that's smarter.
No Fees. No Obligation. Open 7 Days a Week.
Most people know Calder Park for the raceway and the Thunderdome, but there is a small residential community here too, sitting off the Calder Freeway on open, rolling ground north of Keilor. With paddocks and wide-open space all around, these homes get the full force of the weather, and their roofs show it.
Our base in Cairnlea is just up the road, so getting out for an inspection is quick and easy. When we arrive, we go straight up onto the roof and check every part of it, taking photos as we go. Then you hear our honest opinion: is this a matter of replacing a few cracked tiles and repointing a ridge, or has the whole roof worn to the point where restoring it is the cheaper road over the next ten years?

Out on Melbourne’s north-western edge, there is very little to slow the wind down. Calder Park roofs take gusts from the north in summer and the west through winter, and every one of them flexes the ridge line a little. Over years, that repeated movement cracks the pointing, loosens the bedding underneath and lets caps start to rock. One strong storm can then lift them enough for rain to pour in.
The open landscape brings dust as well. Fine soil from surrounding paddocks and construction sites blows onto roofs, settles in the low points of the roof and becomes a gritty paste once rain arrives. That slows drainage and leaves stains that dull the roof’s appearance.
And with almost no shade, sun hits these roofs from dawn until dusk. Coatings chalk and fade faster than in leafy suburbs, and once concrete tiles lose their protective surface, they start drinking water and wearing down more quickly.
Around the raceway streets, these are the fixes that fill most of our days:
Up top, we test every ridge cap by hand, walk each tile face looking for cracks and movement, peer into valleys for dust build-up and rust, and check flashings, gutters and downpipes. The windward side of the house gets extra attention. Photos are taken of everything that needs work. Down on the driveway we flick through the pictures with you and explain each one, then a quote follows in writing, item by item. No charge for any of it, and no hard sell.
If wind has loosened ridges right around the roof, the coating has faded away and leaks keep appearing, repairs alone will not keep pace. A restoration fixes everything in one project.
Day one is all about the wash: a strong pressure clean that peels away paddock dust, road grime and lichen. With clean tiles exposed, we swap out the cracked ones, strip every ridge and hip back to the tile and lay them up again on fresh mortar with a flexible pointing finish. Valley irons and flashings are repaired or renewed next. The coating stage then follows in three layers, sealer, primer and a membrane colour you have chosen. On a block this exposed, that new skin returns the protection the sun and westerlies have spent years stripping off.
Put beside replacing the roof, the bill is a small one. The full process is explained on our page about roof restoration in Calder Park.
Ultra Finish is run by a hands-on owner with over a quarter of a century of roofing under his belt, and he works every Calder Park job personally. Quality stays consistent, and you always know exactly who is on your roof.
All licensing and insurance are in place, and the work is quality-assured. Before we start, gardens are sheeted and the driveway is protected from wash water; when we pack up, the gutters are clear and the yard is clean. Quotes are written and itemised, and they never stretch beyond what your roof requires.
