Aberfeldie's interwar bungalows and post-war homes deserve roof work that respects their character. We stop leaks, replace broken tiles and ridge caps, and add a fresh protective coat once the roof is sound, with honest advice on what really needs doing.
No Fees. No Obligation. Open 7 Days a Week.
Aberfeldie is a small, leafy pocket of Moonee Valley tucked against the Maribyrnong River, with Aberfeldie Park and the river parklands along its western edge. Its streets are full of character homes: Californian and interwar bungalows, brick post-war houses and a growing number of thoughtful renovations. Most still have tiled roofs, terracotta or cement, and many are original.
Our Cairnlea yard is not far from Aberfeldie, a quick run across the west, and older roofs are something we genuinely enjoy working on. Our owner inspects every roof personally, photographs any problems and explains whether a repair will sort it or whether the roof is due for a full restoration. Leaks and broken tiles get fixed first. A new coat only goes on once the roof underneath is sound, because paint over a leak is still a leak.

Many Aberfeldie homes were built between the 1920s and the 1950s, and their roofs have been through a lot of Melbourne winters. The bedding under the ridge caps on these older roofs is typically crumbly by now, leaving caps free to shift. Terracotta tiles can become brittle with age, and cement tiles on post-war homes have lost their surface coating and turned porous.
The setting adds its own challenges. Aberfeldie is close to the river, and homes on the slopes above the Maribyrnong catch the wind that funnels along the valley. Mature street trees and the big trees around Aberfeldie Park fill gutters with leaves each autumn, and the shadier slopes grow a green fur of moss.
Chimneys are common on older homes here, and their flashings are a frequent leak point. Decades of patching by various hands complete the picture, which is why an experienced eye matters here.
On a character home, a clumsy repair can look worse than the fault it fixed. Our aim in Aberfeldie is work that disappears into the existing roof and keeps the weather out for the long haul.
Photos of the before and after come with every job, so you can see what changed.
An Aberfeldie inspection starts with our owner stepping carefully onto the roof, testing older terracotta before putting weight on it. We look at every slope, the ridge lines and any decorative capping, the valleys, the chimney flashings and the gutters along the eaves. Each defect is photographed. Over a coffee afterwards, you see the pictures, hear what they mean in ordinary language, and learn which items should be done before winter. A written quote arrives soon after. No fee applies, and no obligation either.
A fresh coat is the last step, never the first. If ridges are failing on most of the roof, tiles have gone porous and mossy and leaks keep showing up in new rooms, it is time to think about restoring the whole thing rather than paying for repair after repair.
For a post-war cement tile roof, restoration means a pressure clean to strip moss and grime, replacements for any cracked tiles, ridge caps reset and repointed, valleys and flashings put right, and then a sealer, a primer and colour coats in a shade you are happy with. Interwar terracotta is different: often a careful clean, matched tile replacements and new pointing are all it needs, and we will tell you honestly if coating would not add value. Either path costs a small fraction of a re-roof. If you would like more detail, the roof restoration in Aberfeldie page covers it.
Older homes reward patience, and our owner brings more than two decades and a half of it to every Aberfeldie roof. One person inspects, prices and supervises the job on the roof, so the care promised at the kitchen table is the care you get on the roof.
We are licensed and insured, and our quality-assurance check is part of finishing every job. Quotes are written in plain terms and include only what the roof needs. Drop sheets go over garden beds, paths are kept clear, and the yard is left tidy.
