Keilor Park is only minutes from our Cairnlea base, so we know how the wind off the open ground near the airport treats local roofs. We fix storm-lifted tiles, worn ridges and leaks, or restore the whole roof when it is time.

Keilor Park is a compact suburb wedged between the Maribyrnong River and Steele Creek, with Melbourne Airport just to the north. Most of its homes went up in the 1960s, solid brick houses with tiled roofs, and a good number of those roofs are still the originals. After 60-odd years of sun, rain and the wind that sweeps across the open land around the airport, plenty of them need attention.
Our Cairnlea yard is only a few minutes away, which makes Keilor Park an easy trip. The owner climbs up, inspects every section and photographs anything amiss. Then you get an honest call: a handful of repairs, or a full restoration because the wear is everywhere. Either way, you get a written quote before any work starts.

The open ground around the airport and along the river flats offers little shelter, so Keilor Park roofs catch a lot of wind. Gusts work at ridge caps and tile edges, and once the original mortar under a cap has dried out and cracked, the cap starts to rock and the pointing breaks away. Wind-driven rain then gets in easily, often showing up as a stain well away from the actual gap.
Age is the other factor. Roofs from the 1960s are now at the point where their original galvanised valleys are rusting, the tiles have lost their surface and turned porous, and the flashings around chimneys have started to lift. Dust blowing in from the surrounding open land settles on the tiles and in the gutters, feeding lichen and slowing drainage. Scorching summer northerlies followed by icy winter fronts keep the roof expanding and contracting, which speeds up all of this wear.
Living a few minutes apart means small jobs do not have to wait for a gap in a busy schedule across town. Here is what usually comes up on Keilor Park roofs:
On a typical Keilor Park hip roof, we start at the corners and barge edges facing the airport, because that is where wind damage tends to begin. From there we work up each hip and along the main ridge, then across the tile field, into the valleys and around the chimney. Where water has come inside, the manhole is our next stop.
We go through the photos with you over the front fence or at the kitchen table, say plainly what needs doing, and then email the written quote. It is free, and the decision stays with you.
Some original roofs are just plain tired. Open pointing along nearly every ridge, tiles that darken and soak up water after rain, a second or third leak turning up in another room: at that point patching mostly delays the bigger job, and the money is better spent restoring the roof in one go.
First up is a thorough wash, blasting off the airport-side dust, lichen and chalky surface layer. Cracked tiles are then replaced and every ridge and hip is reset where it has moved and repointed end to end. Rusty valleys and lifted flashings are put right. To finish, three coats go on: sealer, primer and the colour you settled on. For a house built in the 1960s, it means decades more from tiles that are still structurally sound, at a cost nowhere near a full re-roof. The detailed version is on our roof restoration in Keilor Park page.
We work across the north-west every week, and Keilor Park is practically next door to our Cairnlea yard. We know what the wind off the open ground does to a 1960s roof because we fix it all the time.
Our owner has a quarter-century-plus of roofing experience and is personally on site at each Keilor Park job. The business carries its licence and insurance, our workmanship is quality-assured, and we treat your place with care: covers over the garden beds, paths and driveway protected, and the old mortar and broken tiles carted off before we go. Your quote arrives in writing and lists only what the roof needs.
