From the post-war streets off Keilor Road to the newer houses around Valley Lake, Niddrie roofs come in all ages. Our Cairnlea crew has spent 25+ years sorting leaks, cracked tiles and tired pointing, and we will tell you plainly whether yours needs a repair or more.

Niddrie is one of those suburbs where two houses side by side can have completely different roof stories. On one block you might find a 1950s brick veneer still wearing its first set of concrete tiles; next door, a knock-down rebuild with a modern roof barely a decade old. Up around Valley Lake, built on the old quarry site, the homes are newer again. So when a Niddrie owner calls about a drip in the bedroom, we never assume the answer.
Instead we drive over from Cairnlea, which takes no time at all, and get up there. We look at the ridges, the valleys, the flashings and the tiles themselves, snap photos and come back down with a clear picture. A cracked tile and a bit of repointing? That is all you pay for. A roof that has worn out everywhere at once? We will show you the evidence and talk through restoration instead.

For Niddrie’s older housing stock, mostly built in the years after the Second World War, the usual failures are age-related. Bedding mortar under the caps has had seventy-odd summers to dry out and crumble. Galvanised valleys have rusted from the inside of the fold. Concrete tiles have lost their original surface and now absorb rain like a biscuit, which makes them heavier and encourages lichen.
The rebuilds and townhouses tell a different tale. Here, the problem is more often how the roof was finished: pointing laid too thin, flashings that rely on a bead of sealant, box gutters with not quite enough fall. These faults show up in the first ten to fifteen years.
Niddrie also sits on fairly high ground above the Maribyrnong valley and Steele Creek, which means wind exposure on the higher streets. A storm out of the west can lift an edge tile or shift a ridge cap that was already loose.
We repair what we can prove is failing, and leave alone what is still doing its job. Typical Niddrie repairs include:
You see a photo of each issue before we start and another once it is done.
On inspection day we go over the roof section by section: tile faces, ridge lines, hips, valleys, flashings, gutters and downpipe outlets. If it is a rebuild, we pay close attention to box gutters and parapet junctions. Every concern is photographed. Back on the ground we run through the pictures with you, rank the issues by urgency, and email a written quote. It is free, and you owe us nothing if you decide to wait.
Plenty of older Niddrie roofs reach a point where fixing one thing just exposes the next. Lichen everywhere, most of the ridges loose, a few leaks in different rooms: that combination tells us the whole roof needs attention, not another round of patches.
Restoring it means working from the bottom up. First, a pressure wash lifts decades of dirt and lichen. Then we pull and replace cracked tiles, strip and rebed the ridges, repoint them in flexible compound and sort out tired valleys. The last stage is protecting the tiles themselves with sealer, primer and colour coats. You keep your existing roof, it looks new again, and the bill is a fraction of re-roofing.
More on that is on our roof restoration in Niddrie page.
Ultra Finish is a family-scale, owner-led roofing business. Our owner has 25-plus years on the tools and personally works every Niddrie job, which is why the quality stays consistent.
That means a few things for you. The inspection is free and comes with photos. Quotes are written and itemised. We are licensed and insured, and the workmanship is quality-assured. Lawns, garden beds and driveways get covered, and nothing is left lying around when we pack up.
