Fairfield's Edwardian and interwar homes have roofs that need knowledgeable care. We repair brittle terracotta, worn pointing and stubborn leaks, fix old mismatched patch jobs properly, and recommend a full restoration only when it is truly worthwhile.

Fairfield is known for its period homes. Streets between the Yarra and Darebin Road are lined with Edwardian and interwar houses, many still wearing their original terracotta roofs, along with some later post-war homes and newer infill. These roofs have character, but after a century of Melbourne weather, they also have problems.
Often the biggest issue is not the original roof but the patch repairs done over the decades: mismatched tiles, cement smeared over cracks, flashings sealed with whatever was handy. Ultra Finish Roofing travels to Fairfield from Cairnlea, our home base, and our owner inspects each roof personally, photographs what is going on and explains what needs fixing and how to fix it properly. If the roof is better than you feared, you will hear that too.

Most of Fairfield’s older homes were built in the early 1900s through to the 1930s. Their terracotta tiles are durable, but after a century, some become brittle and crack under foot or in hail. The original lime mortar under the ridges dries out and turns to powder, leaving caps loose.
Many of these roofs have been repaired several times by different people over the years. Mismatched tiles, cement patches and silicone smeared over flashings may have stopped a leak for a while, but they rarely last and can trap water in the wrong places.
Fairfield’s trees add another layer. Mature street trees and gardens near Fairfield Park and the Yarra drop leaves into valleys and gutters, and shaded roof faces grow moss. Chimneys, common on period homes, are a frequent leak point. Putting it right means understanding how these roofs were built and repairing them accordingly.
Plenty of Fairfield roofs have been “fixed” many times over. Our job is often to undo those well-meant patches and repair the roof the way it should have been done in the first place.
We photograph each repair so you can see exactly what was done.
A hundred-year-old roof needs a light touch. Our owner places each step deliberately and taps the terracotta to gauge brittleness, examine ridge bedding and pointing, look closely at chimney flashings and valleys, and note any old patch repairs that may be hiding trouble. All of it is captured in photos. Afterwards you get a plain explanation of what we found, what matters most and what can wait, followed by a written quote. No fee, no contract, no follow-up pressure. If heritage controls apply to your street, we keep that in mind when suggesting materials.
If the ridges are failing all over, moss has spread across the tiles and fresh leaks keep showing up from room to room, piecemeal repairs may no longer be enough. A restoration puts the entire roof right in a single planned job.
For period terracotta, we give frank advice. A careful clean, matched replacement tiles, fully rebuilt ridges and new valleys and flashings often bring an old Fairfield roof back beautifully, and a coating is not always needed or appropriate. For later concrete tile roofs, the process goes on to sealing, priming and colour coats. Whichever applies, you spend a fraction of what re-roofing costs. For more, our roof restoration in Fairfield page has the details, or just ask us during the inspection.
Our owner has put 25-plus years into Melbourne roofing, plenty of it on roofs older than the owner, and is on site at every Fairfield job. Fragile terracotta and decorative ridge capping are handled by someone who knows how they behave.
Licensing, insurance cover and a quality-assurance sign-off come with every job. Quotes are written, clear and limited to genuine needs. We protect gardens, tiled paths and front fences, and tidy up thoroughly. Many Fairfield homes sit close to their neighbours, so we also take care with shared fences and side paths.
From Station Street to Fairfield Park and the Yarra, homeowners can ring 0421 990 207 and we will organise a free look at the roof.
