Heidelberg's housing runs from period cottages to post-war brick and modern townhouses. We work out what is failing on your roof, repair it to suit its age and style, and say so plainly if restoring the whole roof is the wiser spend.

Heidelberg has some of the most varied housing in Melbourne’s north-east. There are Victorian and Edwardian cottages near the old village centre and Burgundy Street, interwar homes on the leafy slopes above the Yarra, and a lot of post-war brick and tile housing, along with townhouses that have gone up near the Austin Hospital and the station. Each era brings its own roof problems.
That is why we never quote over the phone. We come over from Cairnlea, our owner climbs up, and every defect is photographed before we talk options. On a period roof, a careful repair may be the right call. On a worn-out post-war roof, a full restoration might make more sense. Either way, you will get a clear, written quote that covers only what is needed.

Heidelberg’s older homes often have original terracotta roofs, sometimes Marseille-pattern tiles, with lime-based bedding under the ridges. After many decades, that bedding has crumbled and the tiles can be brittle enough to crack under a careless foot. Chimneys are a frequent leak point, with flashings that have been patched more than once.
Post-war homes, built in large numbers across Heidelberg and the surrounding suburbs, usually have concrete tiles that have lost their surface coating. They absorb water, grow moss and lichen, and their sand-and-cement ridge pointing has long since cracked.
The setting plays its part too. Heidelberg is a leafy suburb, with big trees along streets and around Warringal Parklands and the Yarra flats. Leaves fill valleys and gutters, shaded roofs stay damp, and moss thrives. On the hillier streets, wind can work at loose ridge caps. All of which means a Heidelberg roof often has more than one thing going on.
An Edwardian cottage off Burgundy Street and a 1950s brick house near the Austin need very different repairs, even when the symptom is the same brown ring on the ceiling. So the fix is chosen to suit the roof, not the other way round.
Before and after photos are part of every job.
Our owner walks the roof carefully, testing older terracotta before stepping on it, and looks closely at tile condition, ridge bedding and pointing, valleys, chimney flashings and gutters. On a period home, how brittle the tiles are shapes what is worth doing, so we check that early. Everything noteworthy goes on camera. Then we sit down with you, talk through the pictures in plain terms and follow up with a written quote. The inspection is free, and if a small repair is all you need, a small repair is all we will put forward.
When most ridges have let go, moss and porous tiles cover the whole roof and water is marking ceilings in several rooms, further patching only postpones the bill. Doing the whole roof in one planned job is the better spend.
How we restore depends on what is up there. A post-war concrete tile roof gets the full treatment: pressure cleaning, replacement of broken tiles, every ridge rebuilt on new bedding with flexible pointing, valleys and flashings fixed, then sealer, primer and colour coats. On period terracotta, the advice is often different. A careful clean, matched replacement tiles and fresh pointing usually bring it back beautifully, and we will tell you if a coating would add nothing. Both routes cost a fraction of a re-roof. Our roof restoration in Heidelberg page explains more, and we are happy to answer questions on site.
Older roofs reward experience, and our owner brings a quarter-century plus of it. The owner is also present on your Heidelberg job from start to finish, which means careful handling of fragile tiles and decorative ridges, and no surprises about who is on your roof.
Licensed, insured and quality-assured, we keep quotes in writing and restrict them to genuine needs. Garden beds and paths are protected, and the site is left clean at the end of each day. On sloping blocks above the river, we plan ladder access carefully before anyone goes up.
