Fixing Altona North Roofs, Old Streets and New Builds

Altona North is a suburb of contrasts. Large parts were built around 1960, with modest brick and weatherboard homes on generous blocks. A Housing Commission estate followed in the 1980s, and in recent years former industrial sites have been redeveloped into townhouses and new homes. That means roofs of very different ages, often on the same street.

We are based just up the road in Cairnlea, so getting to Altona North is quick and easy. Our owner inspects every roof in person, works out what has gone wrong and gives you a straight answer: repair, or restore. Photos and a written quote come first; the work comes after you have agreed to it.

      Why Altona North Roofs Fail

On the older homes, the issue is mostly age. Sixty years of heat, cold and wind have dried out the original ridge bedding, so caps work loose and let water in along the ridge. Concrete tiles have lost their surface coating and become porous, and many have a layer of grime and lichen.

Altona North is also flat and fairly open, with wind coming off Port Phillip Bay and across the western plains. That wind finds loose tiles and weak pointing quickly. Being close to the West Gate Freeway, Millers Road and industrial areas means roofs collect traffic grime and dust, which holds moisture and speeds up wear.

Newer homes have their own issues. As they settle, rigid pointing can crack, and flashings that were not sealed perfectly during construction can start to leak.

Altona North Repairs, Matched to the Roof's Age

A 1960s cement tile roof and a five-year-old townhouse roof need very different treatment, so we start by working out what you have and what has actually failed.

      • Ridge caps on older homes: On the c.1960 streets, we lift caps off the cracked original mortar, rebed them and seal the lot with flexible pointing.
      • Weathered cement tiles: Cracked or crumbling tiles come out and matching ones go in, so the roof sheds water evenly again.
      • Newer builds: Settlement cracks in pointing and poorly sealed flashings around walls, vents and solar rails are corrected.
      • Valleys: Galvanised valleys that have rusted under years of grime are replaced outright rather than painted over.
      • Wind and storm damage: Tiles shifted by a gusty change off the bay are refixed, and anything broken is made safe first.
      • Gutters: Grime, leaves and grit flushed out so downpipes can cope in a heavy shower.

What We Look at on an Altona North Roof

Because we are so close, booking an inspection in Altona North is easy. We climb up and go across the whole roof, paying particular attention to ridge lines on older homes and flashings on newer ones. Valleys, gutters and tile condition all get checked, and if there is a manhole we look in the ceiling space for water staining.

Each problem is photographed on the spot. You get a written quote that puts the essential jobs at the top, with nothing padded in and no obligation to book.

Repair or Restore? Getting Altona North Roofs Right

On many 1960s roofs here, the grime is only the surface of the problem. Underneath, tiles may have gone thirsty and soft, and pointing may be letting go along every ridge. Fixing that one leak at a time is the expensive way to do it.

      • Every ridge is rebedded where needed and fully repointed
      • Broken tiles are swapped before any coating goes on
      • A heavy-duty pressure clean lifts the industrial dust and lichen
      • Sealer, primer and two finish coats go on in a colour you pick

You get a roof that looks fresh again, without paying for new tiles. Read the full story on our page about roof restoration in Altona North.
