Hadfield's post-war homes have roofs that have now seen 60 or 70 winters. Our licensed, insured team, based not far away in Cairnlea, repairs worn tiles and ridges, or restores the entire roof when its condition genuinely calls for it.
No Fees. No Obligation. Open 7 Days a Week.
Hadfield is a tidy, quiet suburb tucked between Glenroy and Fawkner, and much of it went up during the post-war housing boom. Brick and weatherboard homes with tiled roofs line the streets around the West Street shops and down towards Merlynston Creek, with a growing number of units squeezed onto subdivided quarter-acre blocks. Those original roofs have done a lot of work.
When something gives way, you want a roofer who is properly licensed, properly insured and not on the other side of Melbourne. Our yard is in Cairnlea, an easy run across the north-west, and our owner inspects every Hadfield roof personally. You get photos, a plain-English explanation and a straight recommendation. Repairs if repairs will do. A restoration if the roof is genuinely worn out.

Roofs built in the 1950s and 60s were sturdy, but they were finished with materials that do not last forever. The bedding mix under each ridge cap slowly turns to grit, and once it cracks, every wet winter pushes a little more water inside. Concrete tiles lose their surface over the decades, turning porous and patchy with lichen. Galvanised valleys and flashings rust, often from the hidden side first.
Hadfield also sits on fairly open ground in Melbourne’s north, so roofs take the brunt of strong northerlies in summer and cold, rainy westerlies in winter. That constant movement loosens caps and shifts tiles. On subdivided blocks, we see a lot of leaks where newer unit roofs butt up against older ones, because flashings at those junctions are easy to get wrong. None of these problems fix themselves, but most are straightforward if caught early.
These are the Hadfield jobs that fill our week. Each one is priced separately, so you can tackle the urgent items now and leave the rest for later if the budget is tight:
We send before-and-after pictures for every repair.
Most Hadfield homes are single-storey with simple hipped roofs, so a full inspection usually takes well under an hour. We work our way around the gutter line first, then up each hip to the ridge, looking for open joints, cracked tiles, rust in the valleys and gaps behind flashings. With a leak, we also go up through the manhole and follow the stain back.
Every fault ends up in a photo, and we go through them with you at the front door in normal language. A written price comes after. There is no fee, and no one will hassle you for an answer.
Three warning signs together usually tell us a post-war roof has gone past the repair stage: pointing perished along most ridges, tiles gone porous over large areas and valleys rusting in more than one spot. Spending on patches at that point just delays the inevitable.
Restoring it works through the roof in order. A high-pressure wash clears lichen and dust built up over decades. Cracked tiles are changed. Each ridge and hip cap is bedded down again and pointed afresh. Valley irons and flashings are fixed or replaced, and then three coats go on, sealer, primer and the colour you have picked. You end up with a post-war roof good for many more years, for well under the price of tearing it off. Our roof restoration in Hadfield page explains it more fully.
The licence and insurance in the headline are not just words on a website. Every job is covered, and our owner, who first climbed onto a roof for a living more than 25 years ago, is physically there for each one, so you never wonder who is up on your roof.
Our Cairnlea yard is a short hop across to Hadfield, which makes it easy to slot in an inspection without a long wait. While we work, we lay covers over the garden beds by the house and keep the driveway and paths protected. When we finish, the old mortar and broken tiles go with us. Our workmanship is quality-assured, and the written quote you receive covers only what the roof genuinely needs.
