Hills roofs cop rain, leaf litter and the odd falling limb. We travel out to homes right across the Yarra Ranges to stop leaks, swap broken tiles and repoint ridges, and we will tell you honestly when restoring the whole roof is the smarter spend.

Living in the Yarra Ranges means living with weather. Whether your place is tucked into the forest around Belgrave and Olinda, on a cleared block near Lilydale or out along the valley towards Healesville, the roof deals with more rain, more shade and more debris than a typical suburban roof ever will. Things wear out faster up here, and a small fault can become a ceiling stain in one wet week.
Our yard is in Cairnlea, on the far side of Melbourne, and we make the drive because hills roofs reward people who know what to look for. The owner climbs up, photographs each defect and gives you a clear verdict: a targeted fix if that will hold, or a restoration if the roof as a whole has run its course. Nobody gets talked into work they do not need.

The ranges catch far more rain than the western suburbs, and much of it arrives as slow, soaking falls that keep tiles wet for days. Under a canopy of mountain ash and stringybark a roof rarely dries out properly, so moss moves in, holds moisture against each tile and gradually turns older concrete tiles porous. Once that happens, water creeps through laps and gaps that would stay dry on a sunnier roof.
Then there is the debris. Leaves, bark and twigs collect in valleys, dam the flow and send water sideways under the tiles. Wind storms bring down limbs that crack tiles or knock ridge caps loose, as plenty of hills residents saw during the big June 2021 storms. Add a housing mix that runs from old weatherboard cottages to brick-veneer homes on steep blocks, and you get roofs that deserve a closer look than a quick glance from the gutter line. Happily, nearly all of these faults are cheap to sort out while they are still small.
Most hills jobs begin with one obvious symptom. Our task is to chase it back to the real cause so you are not ringing us again next winter.
We photograph the fault and the finished fix, which is handy for holiday houses and rentals where the owner is rarely on the property.
It costs you nothing, and there is no catch. We get onto the roof itself, because you cannot judge a hills roof from the ground. Tiles, ridge lines, valleys, flashings, gutters and the depth of moss all get looked at, and anything worrying is photographed. Once we are down, we flick through the photos with you at the kitchen table and explain in everyday language what each problem means, which jobs are urgent and which can sit for a season. A written quote follows. If your roof turns out to be in decent shape, you will hear that too.
Sometimes the photos tell a bigger story. Moss across most of the tiles, failed pointing on every ridge and leaks appearing in several rooms all point the same way. Paying for one repair after another at that stage simply delays the inevitable and costs more overall.
A full restoration handles everything in one go. The moss and grime come off under the pressure cleaner, cracked tiles are swapped out, ridges are rebedded and repointed, and any tired valleys or flashings are put right. Only then do the sealer, primer and top coats go on, in whichever colour suits your home and its setting. Expect a watertight, good-looking roof again at a fraction of the outlay of a brand-new one. Our roof restoration services page goes into more depth, or just ask while we are up the ladder.
There is no franchise behind us and no salesperson who disappears after signing you up. Ultra Finish Roofing answers to one person, its owner, who has spent over 25 years on Melbourne roofs and is physically present on each of our jobs.
That counts for even more in the hills, where steep driveways, awkward access and established gardens all need care. Garden beds and paths are covered before work starts, ladders are placed thoughtfully, and the site is swept and tidied at the end of every day. We hold the proper licence and insurance, our workmanship goes through a quality-assurance check, and quotes spell out exactly what is and is not included.
From the Dandenongs to the Upper Yarra, if your roof is leaking or just looking worn out, the number is 0421 990 207. Ring it, book a free on-roof check, and get an honest opinion.
