Gum leaves in the valleys, moss on the shady side and a ridge that's started to crumble? Living among the trees in Warrandyte is lovely, but it asks a lot of a roof. We fix what's failing and restore what's worn, with straight advice on which you need.

Warrandyte homes come in every shape. There are mudbrick places tucked into the hillsides, 1970s brick houses on big leafy blocks, timber homes overlooking the Yarra and newer builds that have replaced older ones. What they share is a canopy of eucalypts overhead, and that changes how a roof ages.
Strips of stringybark and drifts of gum leaves settle into every valley and gutter. Shaded tiles stay damp, so moss and lichen spread. Storms snap off limbs that split tiles and shove ridge caps sideways. When something starts leaking, owners usually ask us the same thing: can it be patched, or is it time to do the whole roof? We get up there, look at every part of it and give you an honest answer backed by photos.

Most roofs deal with sun and rain. A Warrandyte roof deals with sun, rain and a steady shower of organic debris from the trees around it. Gum leaves are oily and slow to break down, so they bank up behind chimneys and along valleys, trapping water exactly where the roof is most vulnerable. In a heavy downpour, a blocked valley can push water sideways under the tiles and straight into the ceiling.
Shade adds its own problems. The faces of the roof that rarely see direct sun stay damp after rain, and moss grows thick on porous concrete tiles. Its roots open up the surface of the tile, and over a few years the tile becomes spongy and brittle. Ridge pointing also suffers, as constant wetting and drying makes old mortar crack and fall away.
Then there are the storms. A big wind through the Warrandyte State Park and along the river can bring down limbs that land on roofs, cracking tiles and bending gutters. Many of the jobs we do here start with a branch and a phone call.
We only quote for repairs the roof actually needs, and we show you photos of each one so nothing is left to trust alone.
On a bushland block, the parts of the roof we spend longest on are the ones the trees affect most: valleys under overhanging limbs, the gutters on the downhill side, and any section where a branch may have landed. From there we move across ridges, pointing, flashings around chimneys and skylights, and the general state of each tile face. Anything that worries us gets photographed. Once we are back down, you get a straight explanation and a written quote with each job priced separately. The visit itself costs nothing, and you decide in your own time.
If moss has taken over most of the roof, pointing is failing on every ridge and you are getting leaks in more than one place, repairs alone will not keep up. A restoration is designed for exactly that situation.
Step one is blasting off years of moss, lichen and gum-leaf staining. Porous or broken tiles then come out and replacements go in, ridges and hips get new bedding plus a flexible pointing finish, and any tired valley irons or flashings are renewed. With the roof sound again, we seal and prime the surface before laying down a membrane coating in a shade that sits comfortably in the bush. Earthy greens, greys and browns are popular in Warrandyte for good reason.
You keep the roof frame and tiles you already have, and pay a small share of what a full re-roof would run to. Have a look at how we handle roof restoration services if you want the detail.
The bloke who climbs your roof to quote it is the same one up there on the day the work happens. Our owner has been roofing for upwards of 25 years and is personally on every Warrandyte job, so there is no mystery crew turning up in his place. The business is properly licensed, fully insured and stands behind quality-assured workmanship.
Sloping Warrandyte blocks need a bit of thought. We lay protection over native gardens, decks and gravel drives, keep ladders off fragile plantings, and rake up every leaf and chip of mortar we dislodge. Quotes arrive in writing, broken down line by line, with nothing tacked on that you did not ask for.
