Up in the Dandenongs, roofs deal with more rain, more shade and far more leaf litter than most of Melbourne. We travel to Upwey to swap broken tiles, repoint ridges and recoat worn-out roofs, and our owner stays on site the whole way through.

Life in Upwey comes with tall gums, tree ferns and damp, green gullies. It also comes with roofs that stay wet for much of the year. Between the higher rainfall, cold winters and the steady drop of leaves and bark, tiles here age differently to those on the suburban flats below.
If your Upwey roof has started leaking or looks worn, the first job is finding out whether you have a fixable fault or a roof that needs restoring. We travel up, inspect the roof on foot, photograph every issue and talk you through it. The written quote that follows covers what is needed and nothing extra, so you can make the call with real information rather than guesswork.

Moisture is the big one. Upwey sits on the slopes of the Dandenong Ranges along the Burwood Highway, and it gets noticeably more rain than suburbs closer to the city. Many homes are tucked under trees on sloping blocks, so roofs dry slowly after each shower. Moss and lichen take advantage, roots creep under tile edges and the surface of each tile gradually breaks down.
Leaf litter is the second problem. It fills valleys and gutters, then holds water against the metal until it rusts. A blocked valley in a winter downpour sends water straight under the tiles and into the ceiling. Storms then bring down limbs that smash tiles. Finally, cold, wet winters and warm summers keep ridge mortar moving, so the pointing cracks and caps work loose. Most of these issues build up slowly, which is why regular checks matter more up here than down in the suburbs.
Hills roofs need repairs that hold up in wet conditions. Here is what we handle most often:
You will see photos of each problem before we fix it, and again once it is done.
Once up top, we go over everything: tile condition, moss growth, ridges and hips, valleys, flashings, gutters and anything tree-related, such as limbs hanging over the roofline. We photograph whatever is worth talking about, and note which faces of the roof sit in permanent shade, since those are where moss returns first.
You then hear our findings in plain language, followed by a written quote broken down by item. It is a free visit, and you are not locked into anything.
If problems are isolated, a repair is the sensible spend. When moss has covered most of the roof, the tiles have turned porous and the pointing is failing on every ridge, it is usually better value to restore the roof than to chase leaks one by one.
A restoration starts with a deep clean to strip out moss and lichen. Next, broken tiles are changed over, the ridge lines are rebuilt, and the valleys and flashings are fixed or replaced. Once everything underneath is sound, the tiles get a sealer, a primer and colour coats in whatever shade you pick. You end up with a roof that keeps the rain out again and copes with the damp better, at a fraction of re-roofing prices. Our roof restoration services page has the details.
