Thornbury’s streets are wonderfully mixed. In one block you can pass a Victorian weatherboard, a Californian bungalow, a post-war brick veneer and a townhouse finished last year. Each has its own kind of roof, and each wears out in its own way.
So we never offer a cookie-cutter answer. We come across to Thornbury from Cairnlea, and each job kicks off with the owner up a ladder, checking tiles, ridges, valleys and flashings one by one. You get photos and an everyday-language account of what is going on up there. If a few repairs will sort it, that is all we price. If the roof is worn through, we explain why restoring it beats a cycle of patching.

Period homes in Thornbury usually carry terracotta, or on some early weatherboards, a roof that has been re-covered somewhere along the way. Terracotta lasts, but after many decades it turns brittle, and the old lime mortar under the ridges goes to dust. Caps loosen and rain gets in at the top of the roof, often surfacing as a stain in a hallway or front bedroom.
Post-war and later brick veneers, common between St Georges Road and the Darebin Creek end of the suburb, more often have cement tiles. Once their original surface wears off, those tiles absorb water, grow lichen and look tired and blotchy. Valleys rust, spouting fills with leaves from the street trees, and wind-driven rain finds weak points. Townhouses bring their own set of issues, especially where a rendered wall meets a roof section and the flashing has pulled away. A careful look tells us which of these you are actually dealing with.
Older roofs reward a careful approach. We mend what is damaged and leave the sound sections alone, rather than disturbing tiles that are doing their job.
We inspect from up on the roof. Tiles, ridges, pointing, valleys, flashings, spouting and any later additions are all checked, and on two-storey townhouses we look closely at the wall junctions. Photos are taken as we go.
Afterwards we go through the images with you at the kitchen bench, separating the jobs that need doing soon from those that can wait. A written quote follows for the work you choose. You pay nothing for the visit and are free to say no.
Several leaks, ridges giving way end to end and tiles that are porous or furred with growth mean repairs will only buy limited time. Restoring the roof tackles everything in a single, planned visit.
On cement tile roofs we wash the tiles back, change out broken ones, rebed and point every ridge, patch up valleys and flashings, and only then lay down the sealer, primer and twin topcoats in whatever shade you settle on. On terracotta, the focus is cleaning, tile repairs and ridge work, with frank advice on whether coating makes sense for your particular roof. Either way, restoring costs a fraction of re-roofing and adds years of life. See our roof restoration services for more.
Ultra Finish is a hands-on business. The owner, a roofer for upward of twenty-five years, turns up to every Thornbury job personally, so the person who quoted it is the person standing behind it.
Licensing and insurance are current, workmanship is checked against our own quality standards, and quotes are written and limited to what the roof genuinely needs. On the tight blocks and shared driveways common around Thornbury, we take extra care with fences, gardens and the neighbours, and we clear away every broken tile and bucket of debris before we go.
