Mist, mountain rain and tall forest make Sassafras special, but they're hard on tiled roofs. We clear the moss, replace what's broken, repoint the ridges and recoat where it's needed, and you'll get a frank opinion on which of those your roof is actually asking for.

Sassafras sits near the top of the Dandenong Ranges, where the weather is cooler and wetter than in most of Melbourne. Mountain ash and tree ferns crowd around many homes, and cloud often settles over the village and the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road for hours at a time. Roofs here rarely get a chance to dry out properly.
If you are noticing damp patches inside, moss creeping over the tiles or bits of mortar in the gutters, your roof is telling you something. We come up, get on the roof and give it a proper once-over. Then we explain, with photos, if a handful of fixes will do, or if the roof would be better off with a full restoration.

Sassafras gets more rain than the suburbs down below, and it gets it over more days of the year. Add regular mist and heavy shade, and you have conditions where moss and lichen thrive. On concrete tiles worn back to raw cement, moss roots work into the tile and hold moisture there, which speeds up wear and makes tiles more likely to crack.
Ridges suffer as well. Traditional sand and cement bedding does not like being wet for long periods. It softens, crumbles and slowly washes away, leaving ridge caps loose. When a wind gust comes through, those caps can shift and let water straight in.
Then there is the forest itself. Leaves and bark build up in valleys and gutters, and storms bring down branches. A single heavy limb can crack a row of tiles. These are not signs of a bad roof, just a roof working hard in a demanding place.
Each repair is captured on camera before and after, giving you proof of the work on your Sassafras roof while your feet stay on the ground.
Up in the mountains we start with the parts of the roof that stay wettest: shaded faces, valleys under the mountain ash and the gutters along the low side. Then we move on to ridges and pointing, flashings around flues and chimneys, and the condition of every row of tiles. If a branch has hit the roof, we check the surrounding area closely for hidden cracks. Photos are taken throughout. Once we are down, we explain what turned up in plain language, and an itemised written quote follows. Nothing to pay, nothing to sign.
Once moss covers most of the roof, most ridges have lost their bedding and you are seeing leaks in more than one room, patching becomes a losing game. That is when restoration makes more sense.
The job starts with a pressure wash that strips the green and black growth right off. We replace cracked tiles, rebuild the bedding under every ridge and hip, finish the joints in flexible pointing and attend to rusted valleys and loose flashings. With the structure sorted, the tiles receive a coat of sealer, then primer, then a protective membrane colour. Deep forest greens and charcoals tend to look right among the tree ferns on the Tourist Road.
For a fraction of a replacement roof, you end up with something weather-tight and good to look at. Our roof restoration services page sets out the process.
We are a small business led by an owner with over 25 years of roofing experience, and he works on every Sassafras roof we take on. What you are told at the inspection is exactly what happens on the day.
Licensing and insurance are all in order, and our workmanship carries a quality-assured standard. Hills gardens get special care: we cover ferns and garden beds, keep ladders clear of soft ground where we can, and leave paths and driveways cleaner than we found them. The written quote you receive lists only work the roof truly needs.
