Fog, moss, storms and falling branches: Mount Dandenong throws everything at a roof. We travel up the mountain to fix leaks and storm damage, repoint ridges and recoat worn tiles, and you will hear plainly which of the two your roof calls for.

Up on Mount Dandenong, the weather is a different beast from the suburbs below. Cloud rolls in and sits on the ridge for days, rain arrives more often and harder, and the towering mountain ash and tree ferns that make the area so special also keep roofs in deep shade. The occasional dusting of snow or a hailstorm adds to the strain. Roofs up here wear quickly, and in ways that roofers used to flat suburban blocks do not always expect.
Ultra Finish Roofing drives up from Cairnlea to look after homes along the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road and the steep lanes that branch off it. Our owner inspects each roof personally, photographs each fault and gives you a plain verdict on whether a repair will hold or whether the mountain has beaten it and restoration is due.

On the mountain, a roof’s worst enemy is moisture that never leaves. Fog and drizzle keep tiles damp, and shade from the forest canopy stops them drying out between showers. Moss loves it. As it spreads, it holds water against each tile, wears away the surface and gradually turns concrete tiles porous. On older roofs, water then wicks through laps that would stay bone-dry down in the suburbs.
Storms are the other major threat. The June 2021 storms showed just how much damage falling trees could do across the Dandenong Ranges, and even ordinary winter blows regularly bring down branches that crack tiles or knock ridge caps out of place. A steady shower of leaves and bark fills gutters and valleys, pushing water back under the tiles.
Homes on steep blocks, many of them older timber houses and weekenders, can be awkward to get onto, so damage sometimes goes unnoticed for a season or two longer than it should.
Repairs at this altitude have to survive permanent damp, so we choose methods and materials with that in mind. The jobs we handle most often:
Before and after photos are supplied, which is handy if an insurer becomes involved after a storm.
Our owner goes up and looks over the entire roof in person, taking in tile condition, ridge lines, valleys, flashings, gutters, how far the moss has spread and any fresh storm damage. Every concern is photographed. Afterwards you get a clear rundown in ordinary words: what must be done before the next big blow, and what is fine until spring. Your quote comes in writing afterwards, the visit itself costs nothing, and you are free to take your time deciding.
Once moss has a grip on most of the roof, the ridge pointing has washed away and several ceilings are marked, restoring the roof is generally far better value than an endless run of repairs.
The process on a mountain home goes like this. Moss, lichen and grime are blasted off with the pressure cleaner. Broken tiles are changed over. Ridge caps are taken up and laid again on new mortar under flexible pointing, and valley or flashing faults are corrected. Sealer, primer and colour coats then go on in a shade you select. A freshly sealed surface sheds water faster and slows the return of moss, which counts for a lot when you live in the clouds. The spend is a fraction of a replacement roof, and our roof restoration services page lays out every stage.
Steep blocks, narrow driveways and treasured gardens all call for patience. Ultra Finish is led by an owner with a quarter of a century on roofs, and that owner is present every day your job runs, planning ladder positions and checking the work as it goes.
Full licence, current insurance and a quality-assurance sign-off come standard. Written quotes stick to what the roof requires. We shield garden beds, ferns, paths and driveways, and leave everything tidy before heading back down the hill. Narrow drives and tight turning circles are planned for in advance.
