Steep blocks, tall gums and shady gardens make Montmorency lovely to live in and tough on roofs. We clear the debris, fix what has cracked or slipped, and only suggest a full restoration when the roof has genuinely worn out.

Drive down almost any street off Were Street and you will notice two things: the hills and the trees. Montmorency homes sit on sloping blocks, some split across two levels, many shaded by eucalypts that have been there longer than the houses. It is a beautiful setting, but those trees drop leaves, bark and twigs onto roofs all year, and shaded tiles never quite dry out after rain.
So when a Montmorency owner rings about a leak, the cause is often more than one cracked tile. We come out from Cairnlea, climb up and look at the whole picture: debris, damp, pointing, valleys and flashings. You get photos and a frank recommendation. If tidying up a few problem areas will keep the roof sound, we say so. If the damage is widespread, we explain how a restoration would solve it in one go.

Trees and roofs have never been good friends. Each autumn, and after every gusty afternoon, gum leaves and curls of bark pile up in the valleys and gutters. When that build-up holds rainwater against the tiles, moss grows, and when it blocks the flow completely, water spills back under the tile laps and into the roof space. We see this constantly around the Plenty River side of the suburb, where the canopy is thickest.
The slopes play a part too. Many local homes have multi-level rooflines, with lower roofs catching runoff from higher ones and flashings tucked against walls where they are hard to inspect. Much of the housing dates from the post-war decades, so ridge bedding is often original and well past its best. Add heavy storms that shake loose branches, and you have roofs that need a bit more attention than the same house would on a bare, flat block.
Clearing a blocked gutter fixes today’s overflow. Finding out why it keeps happening fixes next winter’s, too. Here is what our repair work covers:
Sloping blocks often mean awkward access, so we take our time setting up safely before anything else. Once up, we walk each level of the roof, checking tile condition, ridge lines, valleys, flashings against walls and the state of the gutters. If you have a leak, we trace it from inside the ceiling as well.
You will see photos of each issue and hear our view in plain terms. A written quote follows for the work that is actually required. No cost, no catch.
Repairs work well when problems are confined to a few spots. When moss covers whole faces, tiles have become porous and every ridge is cracking, you are better off restoring the roof than paying for repair after repair.
The process starts with a careful high-pressure wash to remove moss, lichen and the grime that tree cover leaves behind. We then replace damaged tiles, relay loose ridge and hip caps, repoint them along their length and fix any valley or flashing that needs it. A sealer, a primer and your choice of colour finish the job. You can read about each step on our roof restoration services page. On a leafy block, a freshly sealed roof also sheds debris and water more easily, and the whole thing costs well under what new tiles would.
Every job is overseen in person by our owner, a roofer for upwards of 25 years. The owner prices it, is there while it is done, and checks it before we pack up.
Montmorency gardens are often established and steep, so we are careful about where ladders and materials go. Delicate plants get covered, paths and driveways are protected, and leaves, broken tiles and old mortar are cleaned up rather than left behind. Our licence and insurance are current, every job goes through our quality-assured checks, and quotes come in writing and include only the work that will make a difference.
