Many Kingsbury homes went up in the post-war years, and their roofs are now showing it: cracked tiles, crumbling pointing and coatings long since faded. We fix what's broken, restore what's worn and always tell you which one your roof really needs.

Kingsbury is a compact suburb in Melbourne’s north, sitting right next to La Trobe University in Bundoora. Much of it was developed after the Second World War, and the streets are still lined with modest brick and weatherboard homes from that period, along with newer units and townhouses where older blocks have been redeveloped.
Plenty of those post-war houses are wearing roofs that are sixty-odd years old. If yours has started leaking, or you have spotted broken tiles and mortar in the gutters, the obvious question is whether to fix it or do something bigger. We answer it the only honest way: by getting up on the roof, checking everything and photographing what we find. Then we explain your options plainly. Sometimes a modest repair is all it takes. Sometimes the roof is worn out right across and restoring it is the smarter spend.

A roof put on in the 1950s or 1960s has been through a lot of Melbourne summers and winters. On many Kingsbury homes the original sand-and-cement ridge bedding is still there, and it has long since dried out. Each hot day expands it, each cold night shrinks it, and eventually it cracks and lets go. Loose ridge caps then rock in the wind, and rain runs in underneath.
Concrete tiles from the period also lose their surface over time. Once they are porous, they hold water, grow lichen and become more fragile. That fragility is why we so often find tiles cracked where someone has walked across the roof to fit an aerial, a satellite dish or solar panels.
Metalwork is the other weak point. Galvanised valleys and chimney flashings from that era rust through, often without anyone noticing until a stain appears inside. In Kingsbury, it is very common for a leak to be traced to a valley that has quietly corroded for years.
Each Kingsbury job comes with a set of photos showing the fault and the finished repair side by side.
Footpath quotes are guesswork, so we climb up. Each tile face gets walked, every ridge and hip cap is tested for movement, and valleys, chimney flashings, gutters and downpipes all get a close look. On post-war roofs we also check for hairline cracks around any spot where aerials or solar panels have been fitted. Anything cracked, rusted, loose or blocked is photographed. We then explain the pictures in plain words and email a quote with each item on its own line. The inspection is free and saying no is perfectly fine.
Fixing a single valley or a few tiles makes sense. When the bedding is giving way on nearly every ridge, the tiles are porous and blotchy and more than one room has a leak, piecemeal repairs start to cost more than they save. At that point a full restoration is the better deal for a Kingsbury home.
It begins with a pressure wash to shift sixty years of lichen, moss and grime. Then every cracked tile is replaced, the old bedding is chipped off each hip and ridge and rebuilt with fresh mortar and flexible pointing, and rusted valleys and flashings are renewed. When the structure is right, sealer and primer go on, followed by a membrane coat in the colour of your choice. A post-war brick home can look remarkably different with a fresh roof colour, and the whole thing comes in well under the price of new roofing.
