Tiled roofs rarely fail all at once. They wear out in a fairly predictable order, and knowing that order helps explain what turns up on your quote.
First, the pointing on the ridges starts to crack. Sun heats it, cold nights shrink it, and after enough years it splits. Water then seeps into the bedding mortar underneath, which softens and lets the ridge caps move. Around the same time, the surface on concrete tiles wears thin, so they absorb rain and grow lichen; terracotta tiles become brittle and crack more easily. Valleys collect leaves and, if they are galvanised, begin to rust. Storms and hail add sudden damage on top of the slow wear. Somewhere along the way, a ceiling stain appears, and that is usually when we get the call.
