Greythorn's post-war brick homes were built to last, but sixty-plus years have left their original tile roofs looking weary. We fix cracked tiles, repoint tired ridges and repaint ageing roofs properly, drawing on 25-plus years spent on Melbourne rooftops.

Doing a roof job right in Greythorn mostly comes down to respecting what is already there. Many homes here were built in the 1950s and 60s, often in cream or clinker brick with terracotta or concrete tile roofs, and plenty of those roofs are still in decent shape underneath the wear. They do not need ripping off. They need someone who knows how to repair them properly.
We service Greythorn from our base in Cairnlea. The owner inspects every roof personally, checks each element and photographs anything that needs attention. Then comes the verdict, in plain terms: either a few carefully done repairs will carry the roof for years yet, or the wear has gone far enough that restoring the lot is wiser. We do not pad quotes, and we do not recommend work your roof does not need.

The quiet, leafy streets around Greythorn’s shopping strip on Doncaster Road were mostly built in the post-war decades, and their roofs reflect the methods of the time. Ridge caps were bedded and pointed in sand and cement mortar. Valleys were lined with galvanised steel. Many houses had brick chimneys flashed with lead or steel.
Sixty-odd years on, each of those elements has its own failure point. The mortar has dried, cracked and in places washed out, so caps rock when you press on them. Galvanised valleys rust from the inside, often unseen until they overflow. Chimney flashings lift or perish, and because chimneys sit in the middle of the roof, leaks around them can show up in odd places. Terracotta tiles, while durable, are brittle at this age and crack under careless feet. Mature street trees drop leaves into gutters, and the occasional summer hailstorm finds weak spots. A roof showing these signs is usually far from beyond saving; it just needs a roofer who knows post-war construction.
On older roofs, how a repair is done matters as much as what is done. We work carefully to fix the problem without breaking surrounding tiles.
Post-war roofs keep their secrets well, so the owner spends real time up there. Each ridge cap gets a gentle push to see if it moves. Valleys are checked for the early rust that cannot be seen from the lawn. Chimney flashings, gutters and the tiles around them are looked at closely, since that is where a lot of Greythorn leaks begin. Every fault is photographed.
Back inside, we go through the pictures together and sort the findings into urgent and not-yet. A written quote follows. The visit is on us, and you are welcome to get other opinions.
Picture a roof with drips in two or three rooms, ridge lines loose from end to end and tiles dulled on every face. Patching that roof bit by bit is like topping up a leaking tyre each morning. Restoring it is the better spend.
On concrete tiles, we wash the roof back hard, replace broken tiles, rebuild every ridge and fix the valleys and flashings before building up a protective coating in a colour that suits cream or clinker brick. On terracotta, the emphasis shifts to cleaning, tile repairs and ridge work, and we will be frank about whether a coating would suit those tiles at all. Either path costs well under what re-roofing would, and the house keeps its mid-century look. Our roof restoration services are described in more detail elsewhere on the site.
Doing a job right starts with who is standing on your roof. At Ultra Finish, that is the owner, every time. A quarter-century of fixing Melbourne roofs means they know how 1950s and 60s roofs were put together, and how to repair them without causing fresh damage.
