Up in the foothills, roofs live with mist, moss, mountain ash leaves and the odd branch through the tiles. We travel to Ferntree Gully Upper for tile repairs, rebedding, repointing and full roof painting, and every recommendation comes in a written quote.

Upper Ferntree Gully sits right where the suburbs meet the Dandenong Ranges. Burwood Highway climbs past the station towards the hills, the 1000 Steps walk starts just up the road, and countless homes perch among mountain ash and messmate on steep blocks. It is a beautiful place to live, but those same trees, slopes and cooler, wetter conditions make it one of the toughest environments in Melbourne for a tiled roof.
We service Ferntree Gully Upper from Cairnlea and plan our hills trips so we can give each roof the time it deserves. On site, we check every part of the roof, photograph what we find and talk you through it. The aim is simple: tell you whether a few targeted repairs will keep the weather out, or whether it has crossed the line where restoring it is the better investment. You get the answer in writing, with nothing added that the roof does not need.

Rain falls more often in the foothills than on the plains, and when the cloud sits low over the ranges, roofs can stay wet for days. Shade from tall eucalypts and the hillside itself means some roof faces barely dry out through winter. That constant moisture is ideal for moss, which roots into the surface of concrete tiles and into ridge pointing, slowly breaking both apart.
Leaf and bark fall is the second big issue. Valleys, box gutters and eaves gutters fill quickly, and when they overflow, water tracks under tiles and into the roof space. Strong winds through the ranges bring down branches and can crack or dislodge tiles. Cold nights add frost to the mix, which widens hairline cracks over time. Many homes here date from the 1960s to the 1980s, so their original coatings, bedding and valleys are already near the end of their life before the weather even gets a say.
Hills roofs need repairs that can cope with moisture and movement. Here is what we commonly do:
Every fix is photographed, so you can see what we did without dragging out a ladder.
For the free inspection we climb right up and look over tiles, ridges, pointing, valleys, flashings and gutters, paying close attention to mossy, shaded sections and to any trees overhanging the roof. If there is an active leak, we also look inside the roof space. Everything of concern is photographed. Then we talk you through it at the kitchen bench and leave an itemised price for what is needed. Whether to go ahead is entirely up to you.
When moss covers large areas, the pointing is failing along most ridges and tiles have become porous, piecemeal repairs struggle to keep up with the hills climate. A restoration deals with all of it.
We pressure clean the roof to remove moss and grime, replace cracked tiles, rebed and repoint ridges, swap out worn valleys and flashings, then lay down sealer, primer and colour. A sealed, smooth surface sheds water faster and gives moss less to grip on, which matters up here. All that for far less than replacing the tiles. The business is run by its owner, a roofer with 25-plus years in the trade who works on site at every job. He knows how hills roofs behave and what it takes to make repairs last.
He holds the licence and insurance, signs off the work against our quality-assured standard, and writes quotes that leave out anything unnecessary. On sloping blocks with established gardens, we take extra care to protect plants, paths and driveways, and we tidy up before we leave. Trips from Cairnlea up to the foothills are a regular part of our week, and we often spend a full day in the area, so tell us if neighbours want a look too.
