Eltham's mud-brick, timber and tiled homes sit among the trees, so their roofs face leaf litter, shade and the odd falling branch. Drawing on 25-odd years of climbing onto Melbourne roofs, we repair, repoint and recoat roofs here with the owner on the job.

Eltham looks like nowhere else in Melbourne. The suburb is known for its mud-brick and timber homes, a building tradition shaped by people like Alistair Knox and the artists of Montsalvat, alongside plenty of brick and tiled houses tucked into the bush. Tall gums, the Diamond Creek and the Yarra parklands give the place its character, and give its roofs plenty to cope with.
When your roof starts leaking or looking tired, we can tell you what it needs. We drive out to Eltham, check every part of the roof in person and photograph each issue. Afterwards you receive a written quote covering only the necessary work. Our experience means we can usually judge pretty quickly whether a repair will hold or whether the roof is ready for restoring.

The bush setting is what makes Eltham special, and it is also the biggest test for its roofs. Eucalypts drop leaves, bark and twigs all year, and that debris piles up in gutters and valleys. Wet debris holds moisture against metal, rusting valleys from the top down, and once a valley overflows, rain runs under the tiles and into the roof space.
Shade comes next. Roofs tucked under the canopy dry slowly, which suits moss and lichen perfectly, and over time that growth breaks down the tile surface. Many Eltham homes also have unusual rooflines, with several levels, skillions meeting pitched sections and junctions against timber or mud-brick walls. Each of those joins relies on well-fitted flashings. Add storm winds that bring down limbs and the usual Melbourne swing from hot to cold, and you have a recipe for leaks that need careful tracing.
We fix the real cause of the problem and make sure the repair suits both the roof and its surroundings.
On homes with mixed roofing materials, we will be upfront about which parts we can repair and which need a different trade.
We get onto the roof and check all of it: tiles, ridges, valleys, the flashings at every junction, gutters and any overhanging branches. Photos are taken along the way.
Then we explain what we found in everyday language, and you get a written, itemised quote. If something can wait a year or two, we say so, and if it cannot, we explain why. On a mud-brick or timber home, we also check where the roof meets the walls, since those junctions are where most bush-home leaks start. The visit costs you nothing.
If moss has spread across the roof, the tiles are porous throughout and several ridges are failing, repairing each problem separately costs more over time than restoring the roof in one hit.
First, high-pressure water blasts the moss and grime off every tile. Next come tile replacements, new bedding and pointing for every ridge and hip, and repairs to valleys and flashings. Sealer and primer then go on, followed by colour coats in a shade you choose, perhaps an earthy tone that blends with the bush. Re-roofing would cost many times more, and this adds years to the roof you have. You can read about our roof restoration services in detail before we visit.
Our owner, with upward of 25 years in roofing, is on the tools for each Eltham job. We are licensed and insured, and quality checks are built into every stage.
We come prepared for bush blocks: sloping driveways, established native gardens and access that is not always straightforward. We drape plants, lay boards on paths and, once finished, pick the old mortar out of the garden beds by hand. Every quote is written down and limited to real problems.
