Eaglemont's hillside streets hold some of Melbourne's most distinctive homes, from Burley Griffin-era designs to grand interwar residences. We travel to Eaglemont to repair and restore their roofs with careful tile matching, sympathetic repointing and honest advice.

Eaglemont has a history that few suburbs can match. The hill where the Heidelberg School painters once set up camp later became home to Walter Burley Griffin’s estates, with streets that curve around the contours and houses designed to sit into the landscape. Add the interwar homes, architect-designed mid-century houses and established gardens, and you have a suburb where roofs are as much a part of the character as anything else.
That makes roofing work here a little different. A cracked tile cannot just be swapped for any tile off the shelf, and repointing needs to suit the original finish. Our first step is always a proper inspection, with photos and a frank discussion. Many heritage roofs only need sensitive repairs to stay sound. Where a roof is worn out, we explain the restoration options and what suits the house. We are Cairnlea based and travel across to Eaglemont for this work.

Many Eaglemont homes have roofs with more going on than a standard suburban gable. Multiple hips and valleys, steep pitches, dormers, tall chimneys and decorative ridges all add joins where water can get in. On older homes, the original ridge bedding was usually lime-based mortar that has long since lost its strength, and the flashings around chimneys were often lead or galvanised iron that has cracked or lifted with age.
The suburb’s hilltop position and leafy gardens bring their own pressures. Exposed slopes catch the wind, so loose ridge caps and slipped tiles are common after a storm. Mature trees, many of them deciduous, fill gutters, valleys and box gutters each autumn. And because older terracotta profiles are no longer made, every cracked tile is a small puzzle: finding the right match from reclaimed stock takes patience, and using the wrong tile can spoil the look of a carefully designed roof.
Every repair we do on a heritage roof is about fixing the problem without changing the character. Typical work includes:
A heritage roof deserves more than a quick glance from a ladder. We work across every face, checking the condition of the tiles and their fixings, ridges and hips, decorative elements, chimney flashings, valleys, box gutters and downpipes. Previous repairs get a close look too, since poor patching on older roofs often hides deeper problems.
Then the photos come out and we talk through, in normal language, what we found, what should be done soon, and what can be monitored. Our prices come in writing, and there is no cost or obligation attached to the visit.
When a roof is worn throughout, with ridges failing everywhere and water getting in at several points, piecemeal repairs stop making sense. But restoration on a heritage home is not one-size-fits-all.
For concrete tile roofs, restoration usually means a pressure clean, replacing broken tiles, rebuilding the ridges, repairing valleys and flashings, and finishing with a sealer, primer and colour coat. For original terracotta, coating is often not the right choice, because it can change the look of the roof and good terracotta does not need it. In those cases we recommend a gentle clean, careful tile replacement and full rebedding and repointing, keeping the roof’s original appearance. Either path costs far less than re-roofing.

Heritage roofs suffer when they are rushed. That is why we stay small. Our owner brings over 25 years of roofing to each Eaglemont job and is there in person, from first climb to the final sweep of the driveway.
We are licensed and insured, our work is quality-assured, and we treat established gardens, paths and garden walls with care. Each quote is in writing and covers only what the roof truly requires, with clear advice on what to leave alone.
