Coburg's Victorian and Edwardian homes were built with craftsmanship, and their roofs deserve the same. We repair terracotta and slate-look tiles, rebed and repoint ridges and restore worn roofs on period homes, with the owner working on each roof and every price in writing.

Coburg grew up along Sydney Road and the tram and rail lines in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and you can still see that history in its streets. Victorian cottages, Edwardian villas with ornate gables and interwar bungalows sit side by side, many still wearing the terracotta tiles they were built with. Some later homes and renovations use slate-look tiles that give a period appearance with modern materials.
Roofs like these are worth saving, but they need to be handled carefully. Old terracotta can crack underfoot, and a careless repair can leave a mismatched patch that sticks out for decades. Our owner, who has roofed for over 25 years, personally inspects every Coburg roof and works on each job. We are a short trip across from Cairnlea, and we will always tell you plainly whether you need a repair or a restoration.

Terracotta is a remarkably long-lasting material, and many Coburg roofs have well over a century of service behind them. The tiles themselves are often still sound. The problems are at the joins and in the mortar.
Around Coburg Lake and the Merri Creek corridor, mature trees add plenty of leaf litter, and the gutters and valleys of homes nearby fill up surprisingly fast in autumn.
We get on the roof and move carefully across it, checking every tile, ridge, hip, valley, box gutter, flashing and chimney. Where the roof space is accessible, we check for water staining or damp timber.
Anything needing work is photographed, then explained all in plain English back on the ground. You then receive a written quote listing exactly what needs doing, with the most urgent items first. You will not pay a cent for it.
If the ridges have failed on every side, tiles are cracked across large areas, and fresh drips appear in different rooms, patching here and there will not keep up. That is when a restoration makes sense.
On period terracotta, restoration usually means a gentle but thorough clean, swapping broken tiles for matching ones, and fresh mortar under each ridge and hip cap, finished with flexible pointing, so the roof keeps its original look. On concrete or slate-look roofs, we can also apply a sealer and colour coats in a shade of your choosing. Either way, you keep the roof you have and spend far less than a full replacement would cost.
Both approaches are part of our roof restoration services, explained in more depth online.
Ultra Finish is owner-run, and on period roofs that makes a difference. The owner has decades on the tools and is up there at each Coburg job, which is the gap between a seamless repair and an obvious patch.
We are licensed and insured, the work is quality-assured, and the written quote lists the necessary jobs and nothing else. Front gardens, picket fences and tiled verandah paths are protected while we work, and the street frontage is swept when we finish.
