Canterbury's Federation and Edwardian homes carry some of Melbourne's finest terracotta roofs, complete with decorative ridges and finials. We match tiles, rebed and repoint ridge caps by hand and treat these roofs with the care they deserve, with the owner on site throughout.

A grand old Canterbury home is only as sound as the roof over it. Many houses between Maling Road and Mont Albert Road still wear their original Marseille-pattern terracotta, often with ornate ridge capping, terracotta finials and complex hips and valleys. They are beautiful, and when something goes wrong they need a roofer who will slow down and do it properly.
Canterbury is a cross-town trip from our Cairnlea yard, and the owner makes it for every job. We start with a careful inspection, moving across the roof without breaking brittle tiles, and photograph every fault. Then we give you an honest view: most period roofs need targeted repairs rather than anything drastic, and we will tell you so. Where wear is widespread, we explain what a restoration would involve and how it would respect the character of the house.

Canterbury grew through the late Victorian and Federation eras and into the interwar years, and its streets show it: Queen Anne villas with towers and gables, Edwardian homes with return verandahs, and solid bungalows. Most of these roofs were built with terracotta tiles bedded and pointed in lime mortar, with elaborate terracotta ridge pieces as a finishing flourish.
After a hundred years, lime mortar softens and washes away, leaving ridge caps and finials sitting loose. Terracotta becomes brittle and develops fine cracks. Steep, complicated rooflines mean lots of valleys, and every valley is a place where leaves from Canterbury’s magnificent street trees can collect and cause overflow. Tall chimneys, parapets and box gutters rely on flashings that eventually perish or rust. On top of that, many period roofs carry repairs done decades ago with cement mortar or mismatched tiles, which can trap water or crack the surrounding tiles. Sorting all of this takes patience.
Every repair on a period roof aims to fix the fault while keeping the roof looking as it should.
Walking a century-old terracotta roof takes skill, and the owner handles it personally. We check every ridge and finial for movement, examine tiles for cracks, look along each valley and around chimneys and parapets, and inspect box gutters and flashings. Every fault is captured on camera, so you can study your roof from the comfort of the sitting room.
After that, we talk through what we found, splitting the pressing repairs from the maintenance that can be planned for later, and set it all out in a written quote. There is no fee, and no pressure to commit.
Once the trouble is everywhere, with ridges loose on every hip, valleys giving up and drips in several rooms, a planned restoration is better value than a stream of small repairs.
On terracotta, restoration is mainly about making the roof sound again: a gentle but thorough clean, replacement of broken tiles with matched or salvaged pieces, full rebedding and repointing of ridges and decorative caps, and renewal of valleys, box gutters and flashings. We will be honest about coatings, because on many heritage terracotta roofs the natural finish is part of the appeal and is best left alone. Where later additions have concrete tiles, they can be sealed and coloured to blend in. Restoring like this costs far less than stripping and re-roofing, and the house keeps its period face to the street. Our general roof restoration services are outlined in more detail elsewhere.
A hundred-year-old terracotta roof punishes haste. One heavy footstep in the wrong spot and you have three new cracked tiles to match. That is why our owner, who has roofed for over two and a half decades, personally attends every Canterbury job and sets the pace.
Licence and insurance are current. Every repair is checked before we pack up. Quotes are written, itemised and confined to what the roof genuinely needs, with no upselling of coatings a heritage roof should not have. Mature gardens, tessellated verandah tiles, leadlight windows and front fences are all protected, and nothing but the repaired roof shows we were ever there.
