Camberwell's Edwardian and interwar roofs deserve careful hands. We replace cracked terracotta, repoint ridges and trace leaks properly, and you get a clear written quote before any work starts, itemised so there is no mystery about the bill.

Few Melbourne suburbs have as many fine period roofs as Camberwell. Around Camberwell Junction, along Burke Road and through the leafy streets either side, there are Edwardian villas with terracotta Marseille tiles, interwar bungalows with tiled hips and gables, and the occasional slate roof, many protected by heritage overlays. These roofs were built well, but even good roofs need care after eighty or a hundred years.
The good news is that period roofs can very often be repaired rather than replaced. Original terracotta is durable; it is usually the bedding, pointing, flashings and valleys that fail. We travel to Camberwell to inspect your roof in detail, photograph the problems and explain what is needed in plain English. You then get a written quote, laid out item by item. Only when a roof is worn across the board will we recommend a full restoration.

A Camberwell roof built before the Second World War has seen a lot of change. The original lime-based or sand-and-cement bedding under ridge caps dries out and crumbles. Chimney flashings, often lead or soft metal dressed into the brickwork, perish or pull away as mortar joints weaken. Galvanised valleys rust through, especially where leaves from the suburb’s large plane trees and elms sit wet against them through winter.
Terracotta tiles themselves usually last, but individual tiles crack from foot traffic, hail or settling of the house. Over the decades, many have been replaced with whatever was available, so roofs end up with a patchwork of profiles that do not interlock properly. Hot summer days and cold winter nights keep everything moving. The result is slow, often hidden leaks that show up first as a stain on an ornate ceiling, which is far more expensive to repair than the roof itself.
Every repair is photographed. If a heritage overlay applies, we keep the work like-for-like so the roof still looks original from the street.
We take our time. Each tile course is checked for cracks and slipped tiles, each ridge and hip for loose caps and failing bedding, and every chimney, valley and gutter for signs of water getting past. If a cornice or ceiling rose is stained, we look in the ceiling cavity to find out why. Photos are taken throughout. You get an itemised quote in writing and a plain explanation of which items need attention now and which can be left. There is no charge, and nothing to sign on the day.
When a roof has leaks in several rooms, ridges failing end to end and tiles darkened with lichen, individual repairs are a stop-gap. Restoring the whole roof is usually better value, and it keeps your home’s original material in place.
On terracotta, we wash the tiles carefully, replace cracked ones, reset each ridge and hip on a fresh mortar bed and point it, renew chimney flashings and valleys, and apply a clear sealer that keeps the natural colour. Interwar homes with concrete tiles get primer and colour coats as well. The result protects the roof for many more years and costs a small part of what re-roofing a big Camberwell home would. Our roof restoration services explain each step if you would like the detail.
On a period roof, experience is what stops one broken tile becoming ten. Our owner has been working on Melbourne tiles for a quarter-century and is present on site for each Camberwell job personally.
We are properly licensed and insured, and nothing leaves our hands until it passes our quality-assured checks. Quotes are written down and itemised. We protect front gardens, heritage fences and tessellated paths, and we leave the property clean. On a street of grand old homes, neighbours notice how a tradie treats the place, and we keep that in mind.
