Burwood's brick-and-tile homes are reaching the age where ridges crack and tiles wear out. Our licensed, insured team repairs broken tiles and leaks, repoints ridges and recoats tired roofs, and our owner tells you straight which approach your roof needs.

Burwood is classic eastern suburbs territory: solid brick-and-tile homes from the post-war decades on wide streets between Warrigal Road and Middleborough Road, with Deakin University’s campus and the Burwood Highway trams running through the middle. Many of those houses have roofs laid sixty-plus years ago, and it shows in cracked pointing, worn tiles and leaks that turn up after heavy rain.
Before anyone climbs onto your house, it pays to check three things: a licence, insurance and genuine know-how. Ultra Finish Roofing ticks all three boxes. Although our yard is out west in Cairnlea, we regularly head east to Burwood, where our owner personally inspects each roof, photographs the problems and explains whether a repair will do the job or whether a full restoration is better value. No pressure, no upsell, just what the roof needs.

A great many Burwood homes went up during the 1950s and 1960s, when the area was being developed in earnest. Builders of the era used terracotta or concrete tiles laid on sand-and-cement bedding, and sixty years on, that bedding has typically turned brittle and split, so caps shift and rain sneaks beneath the ridges. Concrete tiles have lost their surface coating, turning porous and growing moss.
The suburb’s established trees play a part. Around Wattle Park, along Gardiners Creek and in many backyards, big gums and deciduous trees shed into the gutters each autumn, keeping the shaded slopes damp. Eastern suburbs storms can bring intense bursts of rain and the occasional hailstorm, which quickly finds any weakness.
Many homes also have chimneys, and old chimney flashings are among the most common leak points we see. Layer on decades of DIY patching and you have a roof that deserves a careful, professional once-over.
A licensed roofer does not just patch the obvious crack. On Burwood roofs we work out why the fault happened, then fix it so it stays fixed. The jobs that come up most around the suburb:
Every job is photographed at both ends, so you can see what you paid for.
The owner climbs up and works across the roof slope by slope. We look at how the tiles have weathered, whether the ridge bedding underneath is sound, the state of the valley irons and chimney flashings, and how clear the gutters are. Every issue goes on camera. Afterwards we walk you through the pictures, separate the pressing from the postponable, and email a written quote. The visit is free, and a roof that only needs a couple of tiles changed will only be quoted for a couple of tiles.
Some post-war Burwood roofs are simply worn out across the board: ridges failing end to end, tiles porous and green with moss, and leaks in two or three rooms. On a roof in that state, piecemeal patching just burns money.
A restoration resets everything together. The process starts with high-pressure cleaning to strip off moss and the remains of the old finish. We replace damaged tiles, strip and re-lay the ridges with flexible pointing over new bedding, and put the valleys and flashings in order. Sealer and primer prepare the tiles before colour coats in a shade to suit the house. A brick-and-tile home on a street near Wattle Park can look decades younger afterwards, and the cost is a fraction of tearing the roof off. Our roof restoration services page breaks the work into stages, or ask us on the day.
The licence and insurance are the baseline. What sets us apart is that our owner, a roofer for over 25 years, is present at every Burwood job instead of sending a crew and hoping for the best. Standards stay consistent because the person who quoted is watching the work.
No Burwood roof is called finished until it has passed our quality-assurance check. Quotes are written, itemised and limited to genuine needs. Gardens and paths are protected, the driveway stays usable, and the clean-up is thorough.
