Blackburn's famous tree canopy is lovely to live under but hard on roofs. Our licensed team clears moss and leaf debris, replaces cracked tiles and repoints ridges on character homes, and tells you honestly whether a repair or full restoration makes more sense.

Blackburn residents have long fought to protect their trees, and it shows. Tall gums and bushy gardens line the streets around Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and along Gardiners Creek, and plenty of homes, from 1950s brick and weatherboard houses to mid-century designs tucked into the bush, sit right beneath the canopy.
We would never suggest cutting a tree down to save a roof. What we do is keep the roof working with the trees above it. That means understanding where leaves gather, which faces stay damp and how a branch strike shows up. We travel to Blackburn, inspect your roof up close and photograph it, then sort the findings into two piles: things worth fixing now, and things that are fine. If the fix-now pile covers most of the roof, we talk about restoration instead.

A roof under a big gum might only see a few hours of direct sun a day. After a shower, an open-street roof dries by lunchtime; a Blackburn roof under trees can stay damp until the next rain. Moss and lichen love that. They anchor into the tile surface, hold moisture against it, and over the years leave concrete tiles thirsty and terracotta shedding thin flakes.
Debris adds to it. Bark strips, leaves and gumnuts slide into valleys and pile up on the uphill side of chimneys, creating little dams. In a downpour the water rises behind them and spills sideways under the tiles, which is why many leaks here appear nowhere near the obvious damage.
Then there is age. Ridges on mid-century homes were bedded in mortar that has had seventy-odd years to shrink and crumble, and damp conditions speed that up. Each crack is a small opening for wind-blown rain.
Most leafy-street leaks come down to a handful of causes. Here is how we tackle them:
Mossy tiles can be slippery, so we move carefully as we go over the roof. We look at each face, the caps, valleys, flashings and gutters, and pay particular attention to the spots under overhanging branches where debris collects and water ponds. Photos record everything we see. Once down, we walk you through it, explain what can safely be left and what cannot, and later send through a written quote. The inspection costs you nothing, and turning down the quote is completely fine.
Sometimes the fix-now pile is most of the roof: moss on every face, pointing gone along the ridges, tiles that have turned soft and porous. At that stage, piecemeal repairs only buy a season or two.
Restoration resets the roof under the trees. It starts with a thorough wash that strips the moss and lichen back to clean tile. Damaged tiles are then replaced, caps are reset and repointed, and valley irons and flashings are renewed where needed. Finally we apply a sealer and primer, then colour coats in a tone that blends with the surrounding greenery. A sealed surface drains faster and holds off moss regrowth for longer, which matters more here than almost anywhere. The cost is a small slice of what replacing the roof would be.
